Yesterday was our annual Valley Krew holiday party at my house. We usually have both a Secret Santa and White Elephant exchange, eat, and then play random games.
White Elephant happened first. It was just something cheap that you either found around your house or made. I put in a US flag, banana, and a CD of songs that I like and I ended up getting this cool small album with pictures of all of us. I have another posts with pictures of that later. Anyway, I actually think the way we did it was more fun than other white elephants. The way we did it, we all chose one gift at the beginning without opening. Then, Harold, who didn’t bring a White Elephant present, read this story and every time the word “right” or “left” came up, you would have to pass what you got in that direction. Eventually, after a lot of passing back and forth, you end up with a present and open it. For us, we just happened to have the right amount of people that we ended up with what we each chose from the beginning.
Food came after and then we decided to do the Secret Santa exchange. Saba had me (which was funny since I got her present from the White Elephant) and she got me a puppet and the book The Missing Piece Meets the Big O. Loved that book since Rene (my SPEAR counselor last year) had me read it. Anyway, it kept going until everyone got their gifts and since we were done with that, we decided to play some games.
Taboo was first and we played one round of that before moving on to mafia, of which we played a good five or six games. In addition to the doctor and cop, we threw in the whore who can also save a person he or she sleeps with. The only catch is that if the mafia kills the whore, the person they slept with dies as well. I was narrator for the first couple games since it is fun knowing who is who and mafia kept winning. I finally started playing and ended up as the whore. Civilians finally won, so that was good.
When we were done with mafia, we moved on to salad bowl, that game where you play three rounds that are similar to taboo, charades, and password. We just accept the name Salad Bowl now because everyone calls it different things and I think it makes more sense than Fish Bowl or other names that I’ve heard.
Everyone eventually left some time after midnight. Just another winter in the Valley.
