'Sexy And I Know It' Gets First Grader Suspended ›

Oh, god, the kinders and 1st graders at the school I work at love singing this song. KINDERS. All the kids pretty much seem to like LMFAO though. During dance, they really love shuffling along to “Party Rock Anthem”. Anyway, I don’t think that this kid should have been suspended. That seems too severe for a 6-year-old who was shaking his booty and lifting up his shirt. I mean, I know of an instance where we had a kid who liked showing her stomach to the boys, who didn’t appreciate it at all. Whenever a kid gets that out of line, one of the teachers just tells them that it’s not appropriate and can eventually get them to stop, so I don’t see how it could get all the way to suspension. Especially three days worth!

It’s interesting how much media does influence how kids grow up, good or bad. Even yesterday, I was with a second-grader and he was singing “Young, Wild, and Free” by Wiz Khalifa and I was like whaaaaa. This kid is singing about having fun drinking and smoking weed because that’s how it’s supposed to be.

This brings up a few questions that I’m still trying to figure out my own answers to but are worth thinking about:

Should parents or guardians be responsible for regulating what kids watch and listen to? It’s an exhausting job since there is always going to be something somewhere that could slip by, especially at school when other kids share what they see and hear with others. Should these things even be regulated? Well, maybe, but how?

I know there’s more, but I’m drawing a blank at the moment, so these are all that I have for now. I dunno, cases like this often seem to interest me, like when the kid got arrested for throwing that ridiculous tantrum, which I felt was only partially justified.

A Kinder’s Take on 9/11

Yesterday, I was teaching my rotations about New York City with a game where they learned about sites like the Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, and the Statue of Liberty. When we were going over the Empire State Building, I mentioned that it is currently the tallest [completed] building in the United States, but that the World Trade Center was taller before it went down.

One of the kinders during the kindergarten rotation raised her hand and told the class about how one day her mom told her that a long time ago bad people crashed a plane into the World Trade Center and that a lot of people died. Not only did I realize that I was kind of old that to these kids, that was “a long time ago”, but practically all the kids in the elementary school weren’t even born when it happened. Maybe some of the fifth graders, but even then, they were probably only a few months out of the uterus.

This just got me thinking, I guess.

Oh gosh, these backpacks are annoying. I know that if I was still in elementary school, I would be all over this, so I feel old complaining about them. They are so popular with the kids at the school I work at and those that have them are always riding them around and crashing into each other. Yep, you just tip them over and you can ride them! And I guess that does make wheelie backpacks cooler than before, but geez. Plus, get this — These backpacks cost over $100. Once again: Dang, Studio City!

P.S. A kid asked me if I knew what Heelys were since apparently that fad is over.

Would who you were as a child like who you are now?

I’m re-inspired.

Today, we had an all-staff meeting for STAR. I actually didn’t know that meant that all the staff of the different STAR schools in the LA area would be meeting under one auditorium until the day before. Katya Bozzi, the co-founder of the program, was the main speaker as she gave everyone a history of how STAR came to be as this was the non-profit’s 25th anniversary of being in existence.

First, I need to state that at 61, she is one incredible ball of energy. You could see the passion she has for what she does and what we do. Whenever someone praised her, she often always directed it back to the staff. When she spoke about how much she wanted to see change and how much time, energy, and money she and her husband spent to start this program up, you felt it. She told us that along with being passionate, you had to be a little crazy. Talk in superlatives. Imagine everything in grandeur.

She asked us, “Would who you were as a child like who you are now?” It was a simple question but it left an impact on me. Even though I am not exactly how I envisioned when I was younger, would I be happy with how I ended up? I think we all need to be reminded of that question once in a while.

I realize that, though now I am pretty sure that I don’t want to be a full-time teacher, I still want to be an educator with the same passion that Katya has. I remind myself of what one of my goals in life is and that is to be able to share a love of learning about the world with others and it makes me happy. And love is so important. Love for people, love for what you do.

During the fundraising portion of the meeting, the person in charge of that department made a presentation in which she stressed that fundraising is not asking people for money. It is sharing your love for what you do with others and showing your passion so that others will feel it and become passionate to. That is where the money will come from. People give to people, not organizations.

Many staff have stayed with the non-profit, climbing the ranks for five, ten, and even twenty years but they all speak about the love they have for the community they’ve created working together. So yes, STAR is in its 25th year now and I am glad that I am a part of it.

A Google A Day ›

Want to work on your information search skills? Then check this out! It’s a game where you are given clues and need to use Google to find the answer in the fastest time you can. Some of the clues can be a little complicated and take multiple searches. Here’s an example of one from September 5th:

Captain John Lort Stokes named a mountain in my honor, though I never saw the mountain on my trip around the island where it sits. What is the name of this mountain in the language of those native to the island?

There’s more and it gets updated every day. I thought it was fun so you learn random facts in the process, so you should give it a try!

Spell Check by John McNamee

I remember when I first noticed “science” didn’t follow that rule either.

How TV Ruined Your Life

Ep. 1 - Fear
Ep. 2 - The Lifecycle
Ep. 3 - Aspiration
Ep. 4 - Love
Ep. 5 - Progress
Ep. 6 - Knowledge

A BBC2 television series presented by Charlie Brooker. Check it out because it’s definitely an interesting and amusing watch. It’s part documentary and part satire. There are six episodes in total, all that can be found on YouTube and all that I have provided links for here. Brooker is entertaining as he tries to convince you just how TV has ruined your life.

And don’t say it didn’t. It did.

“For decades, Borders stores have been destinations within communities — places where people have sought knowledge, entertainment and enlightenment and connected with others who share their passions. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to serve you and the millions of other customers who have shopped our stores over the years. My sincerest hope is that we remain in the hearts of readers for years to come.”

I suddenly feel very sad. I knew this e-mail was coming, but I still feel sad.
